FDA up­dates Mer­ck­'s Covid-19 pill EUA and reaf­firms it should on­ly be used as a last re­sort

The FDA re­cent­ly re­vised the EUA for Mer­ck’s Covid-19 pill mol­nupi­ravir, ex­plain­ing that it should on­ly be used as a last line of de­fense if oth­er treat­ments are avail­able, in­clud­ing Pfiz­er’s pill Paxlovid, which post­ed 89% fi­nal ef­fi­ca­cy re­sults in the NE­JM this week. Reg­u­la­tors al­so said oth­er more high­ly ef­fi­ca­cious in­fused drugs, in­clud­ing Glax­o­SmithK­line’s sotro­vimab and Gilead’s remde­sivir, should be used be­fore mol­nupi­ravir.
